  • Looking for an easy to grow tropical fruit tree? Well, you've found it! Jamun is one of those trees that keeps on giving. Fruits resemble small plums hence the name "Java Plum". Not a plum! but an exotic fruit tree native to India.

  • Java Plum (Jamun) Growing Tips

  • Best time to plant: Anytime night temperatures are at least 50F and expected to rise in the next month or so. This is going to be mid to late spring for most people.

  • Sun: Full sun anywhere in the U.S. It doesn't grow well in the shade.

  • Winter: Frost sensitive, protect from cold wind and frost. Cold hardy to low 20F's (Mature trees) Young trees may take damage sooner so, do make sure to provide frost protection to small trees until they get older.

  • Root system: Roots grow straight down several feet. Tap root.

  • Growth structure: This tree can either be pruned as a shrub or tree. If you want a tree, simply prune lower branches until the tree gets older. If you want a shrub, prune the top of the tree a few feet every season and this will encourage the tree to grow lower branches. Fast growing tree once established. It can grow up to 15-25ft. Tall in ideal conditions and short in not so ideal conditions.

  • Fruiting: This tree flowers in the spring and fruits ripen sometime late summer. Once you've planted your tree in the ground, expect to wait an average of 3-5 years before you see flowers.

  • Watering: Shallow water first season in ground. As the tree gets older, deep water. Do let soil dry somewhat in between watering. This is an evergreen tree so, do not let it fully dry in the winter as it will continue to transpirate and drink water from the soil.

  • Fertilization: In containers, any slow release fertilizer will work. In ground, compost and mulch is all you will ever need. No special fertilizers needed.

  • Container Grown: Due to its root system, this plant doesn't grow well in a container long term. We recommend you to plant in the ground rather than growing it in a container. Tree must be fully grown before it will flower. This won't happen in a container. Don't expect fruit if you want to keep it potted long term.

  • Personal Growing Tip: Once you plant this tree in ground, no top growth is normal until the tree roots fully in the ground. The rooting process can take 1 year+ depending on your local night temperatures. Hot=It Grows faster, Cold=It grows slower. One of the easiest tropical fruit trees to grow in colder areas as the tree will tolerate light frost once established in ground. This is a large tree so, keep this in mind when deciding an area to plant in ground.
